Cyberbullying is when someone, typically a teenager, bullies or harasses others on the Internet like posting rumors, threats, sexual remarks, a victim’s personal information. Cyber-bullying also known as online bullying.
Over the past week , There has been usage of anonymous messaging platform throughout Nigeria. The platform was originally designed for exchanging anonymous messages before it was transfered into a breeding ground for hate, where some people posts negative information, Critiques of fellow students and mean things about people.
I have listened to series of random voice notes of people who has been subjected to cyber bullying via anonymous messaging platform, “Its unfair”, While those people may think their posts are completely anonymous, posts can be traced back to phone and or computer that posted the comments. It is important for people to know that all posts on any platform of social media never disappear and never fully anonymous. Threats are not jokes.
Look at the picture above, cyber bullying are mostly done anonymously, so you may not be sure who is targeting you, as they believe online anonymous means they are less likely to get caught. Since cyberbullies can’t see your reaction, they will often go much further in the harassment than they would if they were face-to-face with you.
Why do people bully? Is it because they have low self-esteem , they are frustrated with their life, they are jealous of you, lack of remorse , to escape their own problem, to look tough, to gain attention? Whatever the reasons for you being targeted, its important to remember that you’re not alone. Many of us have been bullied at some point in our lives, i’ve been bullied before but i got over it immediately because the bully is an unhappily frustrated person who wants to have control over your feelings so that you feel as badly as they do.
A friend of mine was called a “Prostitute” anonymously, the advice i gave to her and what I’ll always advice anybody is that ” Don’t respond to any messages or posts written about you, no matter how hurtful or untrue it is. Responding will only make the situation worse and provoking a reaction from you is exactly what the cyberbullies want, Don’t seek revenge on a cyberbully by becoming a cyber bully yourself.
Cyber bullies can torment you 24hours a day, seven days a week, and the bullying can follow you anywhere so that no place, not even home ever feels safe. And with a few clicks the humiliation can be witnessed by hundreds or even thousands of people online. If you’re being targeted of cyber bullies, you’re made to feel hurt, you may even feel suicidal, your physical health is likely to suffer like developing mental health problem.
No one deserves to be treated in this way, if you’re being targeted, you have the option of blocking the people that are likely to be cyber bullying you but this obviously doesn’t stop it from continuing. However, if it saves you from having to see the abuse and improves your emotional wellbeing its definitely worth considering.
Don’t blame yourself, its not your fault, no matter what a bully says or does, you should not be ashamed of who you are or what you feel. The bully is the person with the problem, not you.
